A Brief History of Printer Paper

A Brief History of Printer Paper

Human ingenuity for storing written communication has always been high. What started on cave walls quickly became more portable as early people used clay, palm leaves, snake skins, tortoise shells, and other handy surfaces to store and share knowledge. However, the desire for a higher level of permanency beyond the cave wall eventually led from dried or fired clay to papyrus and paper.

The Development of Standard Paper

how did they use to make paper

How they use to make paper

Anyone who has held handmade paper can immediately tell the difference from the now much more common store-bought notebook, school, or standard paper. The texture is slightly less even, and the surface is typically thicker and stiffer. The differences lie in the process.

Handmade paper is created by beating, or breaking apart, fibrous materials such as cotton, hemp, or old cloth into their individual strands. These strands are then saturated with water and filtered onto a screen. The wet sheet is then pressed to remove excess water and laid out or hung to dry. Once fully dry, the paper is pressed to flatten the sheet, then cut to the appropriate dimensions for use. In handmade papermaking, this size was usually determined by the widely used “Dutch” standard mold of 44” x 17”, which is cut down evenly to eight 8.5” x 11” pieces.

Today’s commercially available paper adds additional steps to the process, a transformation that began in the 1800s when soda and sulfite pulps were first manufactured from wood. A patent for sulfite pulp was issued in the United States in 1867 and, by 1875, paper production was industrialized.

These sizeable industrial production processes could efficiently pump out almost any paper size imaginable. However, in 1921 the Elimination of Waste in Industry program created by President Herbert Hoover launched the Committee on the Simplification of Paper Sizes. And, to not only eliminate waste but also help handmade paper companies in business, determined to require the standard Dutch sizing – and the official 8.5” x 11” letter was born.

Paper Becomes Smoother and Whiter

The whiter a piece of paper, the more easily the eye can view and distinguish the images and text inked on top of it. So, even before industrialization, whiter paper was a commodity. Before the invention of bleach, papermakers seeking to produce genuinely white paper made their sheets from fine white linen. If that was not available, a bluing agent was added to the water to correct muddiness. Today’s handmade papermakers use a variety of tactics, including newer options such as bleaching and vinegar.

Industrial papermakers benefit from using sulfite pulp rather than rags or other fibers containing additional color. This lack of color means that instead of adding an extra bleaching step to the process, they can add chalk to their mixture before grinding everything down to microfibers. In addition to whitening the resultant paper sheets, the chalk also fills in the gaps that make handmade paper feel courser.

But paper whiteness is not the only difference industrialization has brought to the paper industry. As the world has become more reliant on copying and printing, more efficient machinery has required paper to be smoother. In response, large-scale papermakers have added additional steps to their papermaking process.

Rather than delivering fibers directly from the beating vat to the screen, industrialized paper mills push fibers through a filtration system to clear out additional particles and ensure fibers are a standard size. This homogenous mixture is then forced to spray an even coating across the screens through a nozzle. The result is a smooth surface that can be dried and compressed to the smooth paper sheets required for print.

What do Paper Ratings Mean?

When searching for printing paper, it can often be confusing how many options are available. In addition to selecting the proper sizing (standard, legal, or tabloid), there are a variety of ratings, including brightness, opacity, and texture.

Paper brightness is a measurement of how well the surface reflects light. High brightness is usually a paper that appears whiter and provides heavier contrast between inked letters or images and the background. When making paper, the brightness can be adjusted using minerals and dyes during the pulping process. Printing paper usually comes with brightness ratings between 80 and 113, where the higher numbers are the brighter paper.

Printing Paper Texture

The texture of paper refers to how coarse the surface feels. The level of grain is fundamental when considering paper for laser or inkjet printing. Coarser printer paper is best for inkjet printing as the fibers can capture sprayed pigment and reduce bleeding. However, that same texture could interfere with the heating elements and toner bonding in a laser printer or copier. For laser printers, a smoother paper is more heat resistant and a better choice for more precise prints.

Opacity is a measurement of how well light penetrates the paper. For instance, a paper with a lower opacity would not be suitable for two-sided printing as light easily passes through and displays the ink from the opposite side. Standard 20# copy paper is lower opacity and not recommended for double-sided printing. Opacity is determined by a combination of the brightness and thickness of the paper. Higher brightness and pound ratings will provide lower opacity.

Without the industrialization and development of paper, the digital age would look very different. Fortunately, paper manufacturers have risen to the challenge, developing a wide range of paper options to meet the demands of every office printing purpose and machine. While times have changed, printing paper is still in very high demand.

Attention Sales World.... Would You Like A Slew Of Clients Or A Slew Of Transactions?

"Make your interactions with people transformational, not just transactional."
Patti Smith

Think about this for a moment... Are the conversation's you are having with your clients transformational or transactional in nature?

Sales leaders and salespeople... I know all of you desire and crave meaningful relationships, however; what are the foundation of those relationships built upon?

Transactional intent and thinking should have you concerned. These actions become self-serving as you make sure you get as much as you can from the "relationship" for a set amount of work in return.

Unfortunately, this leads to many of you never going above or beyond what you agreed to.

This transactional mindset and the way you carry yourself becomes fragile. It leaves you in a vulnerable situation and quite replaceable.

Being replaceable is no way to lead your sales life.

Let's all pause and reflect upon this quote from Janet S. Dickens,

“The wings of transformation are born of patience and struggle.”

Focus in for a moment on the word "patience"... The one word in sales that many struggle to comprehend.

Follow along... Could patience and intentional conversations become one of the strongest tools you have to effectively build meaningful relationships with your clients?

Do you crave a slew of transactions or a slew of clients?

I ask this because the way you open a conversation directly impacts what happens next.

It's the direction you take these conversations along with the strategy behind all of it, which determines this... a transaction or a transformational client relationship.

Think about this...

Are you building customers or building clients?

Conversations build relationships, and relationships build businesses.

You never know when one rich and meaningful conversation will lead to exponential revenue growth.

As you start to reflect upon all of this, now, answer me this...

Are you creating transactional customers or transformational clients? Would you even know?

Transactional salespeople and for that matter, transactionally minded sales leadership, are killing the sales profession.

Yes, you heard me correctly... This thinking and the way you all carry yourself are killing the profession and who is to blame for that?

Why are so many of you running around trying to find a "sales deal" for the here and now? I am going to ask you to stop and think about the longevity this has and the mental anguish you're putting yourself through.

Transactional mindsets are only focused on the sale.

This mindset reduces the customer relationship to nothing more than a one-sided extraction of so-called value.

This transactional mindset based on pitch and pounce has tarnished the profession. Who is to blame for that?

The race to the bottom is occurring at rapid rates within many sales channels. Undercutting and monumental discounts is not a long-term business strategy. This approach is not only unsustainable but puts your customer relationships at risk.

Transactional relationships are expensive and unsustainable

These transactional conversations may lead to short-term growth but long-term failures.

TRANSACTIONAL MINDSET

A transactional mindset and the associated behaviors are felt by your customers. I promise you this, at some point you will be replaced by a better transactional conversation.

Are you training your customers? Would you even know?

Why do I say this? Because you and all the other like-minded salespeople are on the same sales ship cruising along within the sea of competitive sameness.

Seriously think about this... How likely will your clients come back for more if you continue to deliver a transactional type of experience?

Do you crave a slew of transactions or a slew of clients?

I truly believe so many salespeople are missing out on a massive opportunity to become a significant part of their clients’ lives, by operating with a transactional mindset.

Transactional mindsets alienate, transformational conversations build client communities.

TRANSFORMATIONAL CONVERSATIONS

Are the conversations you are having with your clients leading to connection?

What could possibly happen if you took some of those transactional type conversations you are having to another level where you could feel more connected to your clients?

Courage, curiosity, confidence, and compassion will move many a conversation from transactional to transformational.

I believe we need some transactional type conversations in our daily sales lives, however; there are plenty of opportunities to move those conversations to transformational.

Quality over quantity! I believe deep and meaningful transformational conversations are more powerful and effective than transactional ones.

Authentic transformation happens outside your comfort zone.

Transformational conversations require you to be open in engaging with another individual without knowing where the conversation will go. There's no hidden agenda or deception.

"I think for any relationship to be successful, there needs to be loving communication, appreciation, and understanding."
Miranda Kerr

Think about the above quote... How can you develop loving communication, appreciation and understanding with a transactional mindset?

Sales professionals with a transformational mindset:

  • Do not seek out predetermined outcomes
  • They ask powerful questions
  • They listen deeply and with intentionality

Do you want to be known as a transactional sales rep or a transformational sales professional?

Do you check in with your clients or keep them informed and educated?

Do you get what you can get or give what you can give?

Are you building rewarding and meaningful client relationships or transacting your way through sales?

IT'S YOUR DECISION

We all have choices in our lives.

A transactional mindset may work and provide you with a sense of sales fulfillment, but I promise you that a transformational mindset will change the trajectory of your sales career.

Bryant McGill nails it,

"Real transformation requires real honesty. If you want to move forward - get real with yourself."

Are you willing to get real with your sales career?

Frankly I'm amazed at the lack of discussion on this announce here. Xerox and Global Imaging seems like a very powerful influence in most markets. The ramifications of this on Canon's marketing plans going forward as well as RIcoh and Konica-Minolta, Global has come into many markets and gobbled up mid-sized dealers and taken it to many smaller dealers. Where will Canon go to maintain its marketrshare? What about all those CPC Contracts? Discussion?

Can anyone tell me if your machine, any machine, will fax multiple jobs to multiple people at one time??? we have a prospect who told us today that his office staff needs to be able to fax 3-4 different jobs at one time to differnet people....basically put 3-4 jobs in the doc feeder and touch start one time and all 3-4 jobs go to different people automatically. Job 1 may go to XYZ company, job 2 may go to the courthouse, and Job 3 may go to the client. I have never had someone ask this for

I don't know if this qualifies as the "BEST" copier of the 80s, but it was the first one I was ever trained on. And it came with a pair of wooden tongs so IF (or should I say when) the paper would jam under the toaster we called a fixing unit and it would catch fire, you could "safely" remove it and put it in the solid empty metal waste basket that you had to keep next to it, so that the paper could "safely" burn out. OSHA must not have existed, for they surely would not allow such a device to

This is great news for the Independent Ricoh Dealers. I wish Canon would do the same thing. But I don't see that coming. As far as HP buying Samsung, HP is saying all the right things to the large Samsung Dealers. We are encouraged. But the proof will be in the pudding! Vince

in order for there to be litigation, someone has to file suit and I don't see Ricoh doing that and if they did, I think they would most likely lose.

In Canada, you cannot enforce a non-compete. I would imagine it's similar in the US. The argument is that an employee's income is tied to skills and relationships that he or she gained while under employment. Whether you are a sales rep or a tech, you cannot take away an employee's ability to make money, even if it's in the same territory. Most OEM's will enforce a 6-12 month non-compete clause. When we hire a new rep, our dealer principal is famous for calling the OEM legal department and

Update: Regardless of what I've found on forums or replies, true SMB2 or SMB3 scanning is not currently supported. Ricoh has acknowledged and is quickly working on firmware. As of now, there will be an updated firmware available before 8/1/2017 for all of the latest Mono "55" series and Color "04" series. Additionally, there will be more firmware released for the mid-volume, production, and desktop models in between now and the end of the year for current models. From what I understand, legacy
