This Week in the Copier Industry 10 Years Ago, The Last Week in November 2008

I guess the BIG news of the week from ten years ago was ere 50 cuts that Ricoh performed that week. However, that was right after the IKON purchase and within four months (end of Japanese) there was to be major cuts with high level legacy employees. Seems to me that one of the covenants if the Ricoh purchase was that all high level Ikon peeps would replace those at Ricoh.  AS Vince would say "that's my two cents".

Enjoy all of the threads from ten years ago this week.

Possibly due to the loss of IKON’s business, Canon announced that it has halted construction of a toner plant in western Japan, that would have cost $1 billion. A company spokesperson said it hoped to start construction of the plant perhaps in late 2009 if business improves. Canon announced it sold an imagePRESS C7000VP production color system to Printing & Publications of Langhorne, PA. Konica Minolta’s

We started as a Ricoh dealer under our first owner, but to keep another dealer from coming in down the street, we took on the Savin line. The other advantage was that we were getting installs for Ricoh and Savin major accounts. Even after Ricoh left us, we are still getting Ricoh major accounts shipped in here. The disadvantage now is that the Canon dealer bought the Lanier dealer.

I must be missing something, but I don't see where this post is pointing fingers at Lanier. We were a Savin and Ricoh dealer for 16 years, but last year Ricoh took away our Ricoh line because we could not continue to meet quotas for both Ricoh & Savin.

At one time we were also both a Savin and Ricoh dealer. The advantages we found were having two support structures, "another line" we could submit as a "competing bid", and simply having a second line. Surprisingly, I spoke to some customer who told me "I'll never have another Ricoh in this building, I hate them! oh, Savin? sure, that's fine" and vice versa.

We had those same issues of customers not wanting this line or that line, and remember at one time the serial number plates had one for Ricoh and one for Savin, so you couldn't order one machine and put a different sticker on it as you can now. Our main issue was we didn't want another dealer to move in and compete for the Major Account deals. But as you said, there were two structures you had to deal with.

Savin had signed us up at their 5+ pricing so yes we did get lower pricing than Ricoh. The only way Ricoh would give us lower than 1st column was to sign up on the commitment programs. The boss didn't want to because if the quota's weren't met, then we would be charged back for the difference.

Re: Ricoh cuts Jobs

·
As for substantially lower pricing, I wouldn't say that much, but it was an advantage over Ricoh without signing a commitment form. Savin didn't use the Aficio League points like Ricoh did, but they did offer a credit card program that was similar to Aficio League points but the points were put on the credit card as 1 point for 1 dollar. Credit limit on the credit card was $50 that you had to pay back, but points were not paid back, but could be used to pay a balance on the credit limit.

To Ricoh "What I Want for Christmas 2018"

I always like to start these Christmas blogs with a small story about Christmas tradition in other countries.

In Ireland, people celebrate Christmas in much the same way as people in the UK and the USA, but they also have many of their own Christmas traditions and customs.

Christmas for Irish people, who are Catholics, lasts from Christmas Eve to the feast of Epiphany on January 6th, which some Irish people call 'Little Christmas'. Epiphany isn't now widely celebrated in Ireland.

There is an old tradition that in some Irish houses (although now not many), people put a tall, thick candle on the sill of the largest window after sunset on Christmas Eve. The candle is left to burn all night and represents a welcoming light for Mary and Joseph. read the rest here

This blog will mark the eleventh blog that I've posted over the years for "What I Want for Christmas" from Ricoh.  Over the years I've asked Ricoh to supply me with new products, and services that could help me sell more Ricoh stuff! That's all I want is some cool new stuff for Christmas.

Geesh, what do I want this year, hmmmm…..

1.  Hey! If any of you are looking for any last-minute gift ideas for me, I have one.  I still want a Ricoh envelope printer and not the over priced EnPress from Xante.

2.  We're all in this together. This is a full-blown, four-alarm holiday emergency here.  I want a 36 inch color wide format MFP that uses color toner, and none of the wishy washy clogging gel ink technology. More and more clients are asking for color for the AEC market.

3. Thanks so much for the A4 MP C501SP that staples! However the price for the hardware and supplies is really high. I'd like  A REAL toner based A4 color MFP that staples and folds. Giving me the MP C501SP is like a one year membership to the Jelly of the Month Club.

4.  I really, really want one of these because my competition is killing it!  How about getting me that color A3 ink based MFP?

5. I'm hoping you can add single pass scanning to the Ricoh MPC 2504 & 2004 series. So many clients are now just focused on scanning!

6. Can you please add a new app to our MFP's that will allow clients to scan legacy photo's/pics/brochures and directly upload them to Instagram, Facebook, Linkedin and Twitter?

7. Here's a great idea, how about built in embedded scanning software for indexing/metadata and folder search integration as standard feature in all of our copiers.

8. This would really help me in the field, I'd like to have more aggressive cost per page with all of the Ricoh printers.

9. I could really use A4 black and color MFP's that have stapling, while you're at it can you also give us faster black A4's.  Maybe 75ppm - 90ppmm please!

10. My next to last wish is that you can bring us tri-fold feature for all of our color MFP's.

11.  Dagnabit, I've asked for this for quite some time and you've never listened.  I want a wide format copier/printer/scanner with an automatic document feeder!  It only has to hold 20 pages. If you can do it for fax machine you can surely make it for the wide formats.

Boy oh boy that's a lot of stuff to look for!

Color Label Press University "Glossary of Terms" Part Ten, Course One

In the past I've called my self a hunter of wide format devices. I'm know moving on to call myself a hunter for color labels, which will lead me to placing net new label presses.

Over the last month or so, I've noticed multiple rolls of color labels in Wawa's, Quick Chek (both of these are gas station/food markets here in New Jersey).  In addition I also scoped multiple rolls of labels in McDonalds and Dunkin Doughnuts (or Dunkin as they have re-branded).  See and ye shall find color labels everywhere!

Ink is all around us, while pages are reducing in the office, ink usage for branding is on fire.  Next time you're at you're favorite gas convenience store, stop and take a look at the opportunities, you'll be floored!

Label Press University

At the top of each blog you'll see color label press icon.  Clicking that link which is at the top of each blog will then bring you the collection of blogs for Color Label Press University.  It's pretty neat, you'll see all of the blogs that we've posted for an easier read and simple way to toggle from blog to blog.

Color Label Presses can be used as seeding devices in larger Print4Pay opportunities, or help that dealer or rep get a conversation going with an account where they have never had any traction with MFP's or IT services.  In addition, the competition is ripe for takeover.   Let us not forget about the GP!

The market for full color digital labels in huge and the potential to make some serious commissions is enormous.  BTW, isn't that why we're in this crazy business?

This Week in the Copier in Industry, Third Week of November 2003

My sales month ended today, thus allowing time for our beloved bean counters the chance to close the month on the calendar end of month.   don't mind and I'm kind of use to it. I figure that closing the month early gives me two end of the month chances to close some orders.  Of course one is our actual close and the other is calendar end of month.  December this year is a little frightening since Christmas falls on a Tuesday.  Which means most will not be working on the 24th.  Thus December only gives me 19 selling days compared to the average month that has 22 selling days. It's GO time!

Lanier and Savin dealers left to compete for SBM's. My two cents worth.

Consistency... It's At The Core Of Every Sales Professional

"Getting an audience is hard. Sustaining an audience is hard. It demands a consistency of thought, of purpose, and of action over a long period of time."
Bruce Springsteen

When it comes to sales performance, consistency separates the good from the great. How often have you observed a sales rep having a series of record quarters or a banner year, only to follow it up with spats of mediocrity and below average performance?

Consistency, especially in the sales world is an enormous word. This differentiates the successful from the unsuccessful and the professionals from the reps.

Consistency will change the course of your sales life!

  • Consistency allows you to measure results
  • Consistency yields accountability
  • Consistency builds upon your reputation

Like it or not, being consistent is crucial if you want to make any significant change within sales your life.

Unfortunately...

"Salespeople today are consistently inconsistent"

DO YOUR JOB

To be consistent is to completely dedicate yourself to a task, activity or goal. It means to fully remain engaged without distraction. I'm simply amazed and astonished how many in sales negotiate with themselves the non-negotiable aspects of their job!

To be consistent requires commitment. It requires you to commit yourself to a sustained effort of action over the long-term. Keep your word to yourself, management and your family that you will follow through with what you set out to do.

Just do your job! This is what you signed up for when you decided to work within the sales profession.

THE STRUGGLE

Most salespeople struggle with staying consistent over the long-term because so much of the focus is placed on the short term. If they don’t get immediate results from their actions, they don’t see the point with continuing with those actions over the long-haul. One can point the finger directly at management for fostering this short term behavior.

Many find it difficult to stay consistent because there are just too many distractions. Salespeople are simply not focused, committed nor disciplined enough to stick with something in the short-term for long-term results.

"Just stop the excuses and get to work!"

There are no quick results and no silver bullet moments when it comes to a commitment to consistency. Consistency, it's all about making incremental improvements over time. The results you're after will eventually come, however; they'll come over an extended period of time when you commit to consistency.

The right activity + enhancing the skill set + daily habits = sales success

AT THE CORE

In order to remain consistent, one must commit to being consistent. This at the heart, the core of every sales professional.

A sales professional realizes the greatest power lies in the present moment. They understand consistency demands they stay attentive, present and mindful without losing focus. It demands they remain disciplined to the moment without exception, no questions asked.

Many in sales struggle with consistency! When they fail to see immediate results from their actions, they give up!

A true sales professional...

  • Stays disciplined in the moment
  • They understand "right now" is the only moment that matters
  • They stay consistent in the moment as they know what they need to do

They consistently apply themselves over an extended period of time in order to reap long-term sales rewards. I know this may sound simple on the surface but we live in a sales society built upon instant gratification No wonder only a small amount of sales professionals achieve any worthwhile long-term success?

"Success, it's not a light switch you turn off and on"

PLAN

Consistency over time requires planning. A sales professional thinks ahead as they plan, prepare and practice consistent behaviors. They understand their core activities are built around their values, a purpose, a plan and goals. If for any reason their priorities are not in alignment with these areas, they understand it will be difficult to maintain consistency over the long-haul.

What specifically can you do to maintain consistency?

How will you remain consistent when you get distracted from your core activities?

A sales professional builds small consistent daily routines to help them form new habits as they know this assists them in supporting their goals.

ACTION

Consistency along with focus comes in the form of proper preparation, planning and practice. A professional prepares each day with consistent action. They mentally prepare themselves with daily doses of self-reflection.

They ask of themselves:

  • What action do I need to do to achieve my goal?
  • What actions and activities do I need to repeat to achieve my goal?

They are laser focused and have a clear idea of what needs to happen in order to achieve their desired outcome.

They understand what repetitive activities they must do and simply take action.

FOCUS

Steady focus is at the core of a sales professional.

They understand and...

  • Focus on what’s most important now
  • Focus on one thing at a time
  • Focus on the extreme execution of the activity, prospecting

A sales professional focuses in on the one most important thing they need to do at this moment in time to help them in the long-run to accomplish their goals. Extreme focus is not easy. It requires discipline and accountability over the long-term.

A sales professional constantly asks themselves...

How must I think to stay focused?

They push through the discomfort, they don't give up and stay the course until they have achieved their goals.

IT'S ALL ABOUT CONSISTENCY

Your sales life is too precious to waste away. Your future rests solely in your hands. You and you alone decide what you'll focus on. You and you alone choose to be distracted. You and you alone can only decide to take action. This all begins with small steps and a positive mindset. You must commit yourself to consistency each and every single day without fail for weeks, months and years.

You may not see immediate results but over time and with consistent action you will build the foundations of a meaningful sales life.

"Salespeople today are consistently inconsistent"

Wide Format Technology Update- The Canon TX Series printers and MFP Systems

Just about a year ago, Canon USA released their new TX Series of Wide Format inkjet printers and MFP Systems. Canon has positioned the TX Series as a higher volume solution to capture opportunities on the production side of the aqueous inkjet technical documents market. There are two basic TX Series models available, the TX 3000 and TX 4000. The difference in these models is their supported print width, the 3000 being a 36” printer and the 4000 is a 44” printer. Both TX printers are single roll units with the option of a second roll that is easily field upgradable. In addition, Canon also launched their new T36 scanner with these units for configuration as a full MFP unit. So, the result is a very flexible configurable higher volume lineup of 8 printer and MFP models. Fully loaded, the two-roll 4000 MFP unit lists at $9,495.

Canon designed these models to fit a variety of technical print markets including standard architecture, engineering, construction and something they are calling “office document enlargements”. I believe this last item is the ability for departmental workgroups to use the supplied MS Office plug-in to produce large format timelines, PPT presentations and Excel graphs and spreadsheets. For ease of understanding lets just call the “office document enlargement market” (where do they come up with these terms?) what it really is…and that would be POSTER PRINTING.

National Azon logo

So, the product was launched with great fanfare and special incentives a year ago. Sales went well, despite limited inventory, but over the last six months we have seen a very interesting trend emerge with the imagePROGRAF TX Series. Sales of the product to corporate America are increasing month over month and quarter over quarter. What is the reason you may ask??? Well for starters, there is virtually nothing to not like about this product, it’s got everything you would expect plus much more. I won’t bore you with a full list but some of the more outstanding features of the TX Series include:

  • Fast print speeds – up to 3 D-size prints per minute.
  • Increased print quality – new Canon high density, high precision print head design with over 15,000 nozzles (Canon’s head technology is by far superior to anything in the market) lays down 5 picoliter-size ink droplets at 2400 x 1200 dpi.
  • Optional second roll unit for up to 3,900 sq. feet of uninterrupted printing. The roll units can also double as a take up reel.
  • Automatic media loading- The printer detects the roll and automatically feeds it through. No manual feed required.
  • Direct USB thumb drive printing.
  • Enhanced security features including a self-encrypting hard disk and secure disk and file erase.
  • TX Series stacker- increased flexibility and document handling with mixed sized prints up to 100 sheets.

I could go on and on but for a sub 10k price point, the Canon TX Series includes features that may not be available in units twice their price. There are several other key features that have emerged as the true drivers behind the growing success of the TX Series and they are ….

Reliability- Canon tried something new with the TX Series and that was to offer the product with a 90-day warranty instead of the standard one- year. This move was based on requests from the reseller channel to allow the service and support revenue stream to begin earlier in the life cycle of the product allowing them to capture revenue faster. Now this only works if the product is reliable and what we are seeing in the field has shattered expectations. The TX is truly exceeding the metrics provided by the manufacturer. We know of placements doing 10-20k per month without a problem.

New LUCIA TD Pigment Ink Set- The TX series features a pigment-based ink set which produces fine text and lines on both inkjet and non-inkjet plain paper. The addition of the new LUCIA water resistant pigment-based set opens more usage for the option to print posters, maps, signs and displays. This capitalizes on the trend that the technical print market is experiencing which is the cross-over from standard black and white technical prints to graphic arts or poster printing.

Canon software suite- Newly developed for the TX Series are a series of industry leading software utilities designed to help the users print, a trend Canon calls an “investment in the simplification of printing”. The included software suite includes Free Layout Plus, Poster Artist Lite, Direct Print & Share, Accounting manager, Unified print drivers, AutoCAD optimized print driver, Print Plug-in for MS Office, Apple AirPrint etc. A space limitation keeps me from a full explanation of each of these utilities but please take a few moments to peruse Canon.com and enter any of the above names into the search field. Or click this link for a software suite list: https://cloud.azon.com/index.php/s/wYfgmx4gcRF2yXY.

National Azon logo

Summary- Whether you are currently invested in wide format sales and support, or just beginning the process, the Canon TX Series is a product worthy of very strong consideration. From the excellent print quality to the ease of service, the high-quality scan/copy/print, low cost of operation, poster printing, media offerings, pigment ink, and included software utilities the TX Series is the first truly hybrid printer designed to help you capture the move from B/W technical to Color technical, poster printing and beyond.

Attention Sales Leaders... Take A Look At Your Sales Team, And Then Make A Change!

“Your premium brand had better be delivering something special, or it’s not going to be in business.”
Warren Buffet

The late great Michael Jackson, "If you wanna make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and make that change"

I'm starting with the man in the mirror
I'm asking him to change his ways
And no message could have been any clearer
If you want to make the “sales” world a better place
Take a look at your sales team, and then make a change

Your clients and prospects are using digital content to make their purchasing decisions, and what are you doing about it? The ironic thing, you and your sales team use digital content to make purchasing decisions. An overwhelming majority (89%) of B2B researchers use the internet in their research process.

Selling in today’s ultra-connected, fast paced business environment is brutally tough. Your clients and prospects are drowning themselves online as they conduct their own research. They're becoming their own tour guides as they educate themselves to solve specific problems existing within their business environment.

My question to you...

What are you doing to help your sales team position themselves online to capture the attention of your clients and prospects?

YOUR SALES TEAM HAS A BRAND

We can all agree, your company's brand is one of the most important factors to its ongoing success. It's the crowning touch to corporate identity; prepared, packaged and presented in such a way to be aesthetically pleasing, recognizable and attractive to prospects along with your clients.

However, your company is not alone in the quest for solid branding. Personal branding, the art of building a one and only brand around each and every member of your team, is equally important. Personal branding necessitates that your sales team finds a signature image, their unique voice, a recognizable standard for their followers, prospects, and clients to rally around.

Some will agree, each and every member of your sales team is front and center, the face of the business. The development of their brand allows them to establish a reputation and an identity while still maintaining a personal level of trust and interaction.

"Being relevant and memorable is the new differentiator"

How is your sales team becoming recognizable in a crowded marketplace? How well are they building their authority? How well are they building upon becoming subject matter experts? How well are they creating their following?

I encourage you to help your sales team create their unique brand and rise above the noise!

Think about the following...

How does my sales team differentiate themselves enough that prospects want to talk to them and not feel like they're hearing the same story from every other sales rep?

5 BRANDING TIPS

A personal brand is mission critical and in sales it's vital! In a matter of seconds, a client or a prospect can form an opinion about one of your sales reps with a simple Google search.

"If you're your authentic self, you have no competition"

AUTHENTICITY

Authenticity requires self-knowledge and self-awareness. Authentic sales people accept their strengths and weaknesses. They are accountable to themselves. They are connected to their values and desires and act deliberately in ways consistent with those qualities.

Be a normal human being. Normal human conversation goes a long way. Have your sales team really get to know your clients and take the “sales” hat off.

"Humanize what many in sales have dehumanized"

REAL

Be genuine and not a fake. There are way too many sales facades and empty suits running around the sales world. Prospects can smell insincerity a mile away. Prospects will respond favorably and your clients will come back again and again when they see your salespeople as the real deal -- instead of just an all about me sales rep.

CONSISTENT

In sales, we over complicate the process. We fail to do the little things on a consistent basis. Instead of focusing on doing just one or two things exceptionally, we become obsessed with doing everything perfectly. The result is frustration and lackluster sales performance. The key to success in sales is to identify one or two small things we can do well and do them consistently.

"Sales reps are consistently inconsistent!"

PERSONABLE

People skills are a must to stay at the top in sales. Your sales team must learn how to get along with, enjoy meeting with and speaking with a wide variety of people. The way your sales team portrays themselves is exactly how they should be perceiving themselves.

People can smell B.S. from a mile away and if you’re sales team is pretending to be something they're not, I guarantee you people can tell and it’s most likely the reason your reps are being pigeon-holed.

HELPFUL

Are your sales reps truly being themselves, instead of being some kind of sales machine? Are they an interested individual who wants to HELP, unlike many who are looking for another commission check? The foundation of sales is around the art of the help.

How well are your sales reps helping their clients and prospects?

BRINGING THIS ALL TOGETHER

How your sales team cleverly captures, converses, collaborates and connects with your clients and prospects will determine their long term sales success.

Their personal brand is like a garden. Once they lay the groundwork, plant the seeds, fertilize and water; they'll be in a great position to eventually reap the benefits of their hard work.

  • How authentic are your sales reps?
  • How real are your sales reps?
  • How consistent are your sales reps?
  • How personable are your sales reps?
  • How helpful are your sales reps?

7 Signs of The Average Copier Salesperson

This blog is not meant to disparage the average copier salesperson. It's more about taking the talking points and making improvements so that you can become the above-average salesperson.

  1. Five PM rolls around, and it's quitting time; working late is not an option.

  2. I'm okay with not hitting my revenue quota; it doesn't bother me at all.

  3. A client calls you after 5 PM, and you know who it is, but you let it go to voicemail anyway.

  4. The only time a prospect has to see a demonstration is on the weekend. This is a problem because you don't work weekends.

  5. They are not involved with social media to promote their knowledge or skills with others.

  6. They do not take the time to educate themselves about their products or services and rely on others to answer all their questions.

  7. They don't have the time to share their knowledge with new reps in the office.

I could probably rattle off another ten points on this subject. Sales is not a 9-5 job; if you want 9-5 work, then go work at McDonald's. Oh, that's right, McDonald's now has automated kiosks to take orders; maybe a bank teller will do?

It's 11:28 PM, and I just finished sending a couple of emails to prospects. Nothing is better than sending late emails to prospects because it shows that you're a hard worker. DMs like and trust people who work hard.

I picked this up somewhere, "prospect by day and quote by night." I still do this when I get behind the eight ball. Most of November and December will see me working late into the night because I care about obtaining my quota. In fact, I always want to exceed the quota. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't, but after  years of selling copiers, I still have that desire to succeed.

Think outside the box, be different, give your client a unique experience when you meet. Try bringing coffee, maybe some company pens, pads, or candies. Do something that makes YOU stand out from the others.

It's now 11:35 PM. I have a busy day ahead, and I hope this helps someone!
