The Week in Copiers Fifteen Years Ago

The Second Week of February 2006

I had a little time after work today to review a Minnella's Pocket Guide to Copiers (low and middle volume) from 1990. I wanted to see how many companies were in the business that offered dealerships. Notice I did call them manufacturers and the reason for that is many of these companies bought the copiers from the manufacturer but then re-labeled them as a different brand.

Can anyone guess how many there were in 1990?  Do you give up?  There were 25 companies!  With many obscure names such as Silver Reed, Sanyo, Towa, Selex and Swintec.  Interesting that four of those five names also manufactured typewriters.

Enjoy these awesome copier threads from 15 years ago this week!

Xerox has a new 6204 WF machine and I was wondering if anyone has any opinion or facts as to where it matches up with the Ricoh 240W and Ricoh 480W machines? Any input would be greatly appreciated. The word from across the pond (rumor?) is that we may have a Segment 1 Ricoh Gel Print MFP in the near future. 16ppm black and 10 ppm color and believe it or not duplexing with Gel! Hopefully this can lead to exciting technology and great consumables!

no there are not any systems that will scan 11 x 17 and only only print to legal or letter. Years ago Minolta had a 350Z (analog) that was capapble of reducing 11x17, but would only copy letter and leagal. The major selling point was that they could reduce the 11 x 17's to letter or legal and they would not have to make the investment into a copier that also prints 11x17 if they did not need it. It worked, I sold many of these boxes convincing the customer about thier 11 x 17 requirements. I

We do Ricoh and Canon. The Canon box can set user limits (B&W and/or Color). The Ricoh cannot without Access Control Product. I have a list of venders that provide the hardware/software. However, you can easily find one with a internet search. If you want names, I can provide if requested. We have not had to use them because we have access to Canon. Not sure about the Xerox.

Plotbase will not print if 240W has a Stamp Board enabled

·
Has anyone had this problem? With 2 recent installations, Plotbase will not print if the Stamp Board (on 240W) is enabled. Plotbase status screen says "Call for Service". 240W does not display anything but when you pull a service report off the mainframe, it lists a 330 service code. The only way to get rid of the problem is to disable the Stamp Board so that Plotbase can print. Perhaps we are doing something wrong?

RPCS point and print problems

·
We have a customer with about 10 new mfp's (mostly 3035's and 3045's), and we are experiencing apparent rpcs point and print problems. Random slow printing, print driver icons missing, problems with locked print, etc.My question is, if you cannot load the printer using point and print what is the preffered method while still mainting some level of centralized control at the server (this place has over 100 users)? Thanks in advance for any replies.

Need help with no print and error message in plotbase (240W)

I have a construction company that typically receives and prints PDF's that come in via e-mail onto the 240W. Today they received 2 pdf documents that were zipped for e-mail. They unzipped the file and opened in Acrobat reader 7.0 (file type in properties indicated Adobe Acrobat ver 7.0 Pdf on both files). Then selected print using the windows print driver (without batching). The file wouldn't print and we saw this error message in plotter status window. "License information file format DWG. No

In many cases, the Lexmark eSF eliminates the need for a server to run customized applications. Customers in large enterprise

I have seen this problem... like 18 months ago. The 240w is generating an error, the display on the 240w shows nothing out of place but the Plotbase software detects the error and won't print until the error is cleared. Unfortunatly, the solution in my situation was to disable the Stamp board in Service Settings. This option is turned on by default even if you do not have a stamp board. This doesn't seem like it would be a fix in your situation. I called Ricoh when I encountered this issue

These reps are NOT providing a valuable service that is worth the extra money the customer pays above cost. Given that a customer contacting a dealer for a copier has no

Crap, I was always under the assumption that Ricoh never had "direct field sales". That the RBS's of the world bought like we bought or somewhat like it. How does a dealer compete with "direct field sales". Biy I sure hope I interpreted this letter wrong. Art Post

Competitive Information Chart

Art Post (Guest) ·
Competitive Information Chart One area in which reps often need help is in answering customer requests for comparisons of your product to your competitions. Reps must be able to focus on your product’s unique selling points, and how they compare and contrast to the competition. One way to help them do this is to chart which reps are winning or losing accounts to which competitors, and why. With that knowledge, you can train reps in the value-added selling techniques appropriate to you product

We haven't had much problem with damage lately, but I will tell our warehouse to keep an eye out. Are you referring to visible damage to the box or damage discovered out of the box? We're told to accept but immediately document damage on the shipper's paperwork, and file claim with carrier. I believe the rationale is that once it leaves Ricoh's loading dock, the responsibility for the product lies with the carrier. Check and see if it's the same carrier for all your damaged shipments; and if it

right now the obvious things are: XES is brand new - ask for current customer references! ricoh still has smaller footprint. Push advantages of external controller over embedded controller. Just a follow up for Buyer Zone, a few more things that irked me. When you register you are told that you are one of six preferred vendors. I double check and yes, we were one of six. They sent me a list of the six vendors that would contact me. After a week, I received a call from Xerox and another dealer and they were not on the original lease. I can only assume that 6-9 dealers or manufacturers are contacting the end users. What a way to start a price WAR!!! In recent recent weeks, I have

Let's not lose track of Jason's statement that most salesreps do not consult and customer's don't know who they are going to get from a dealership. We are all in agreement (including Jason) that the consultative approach is best but we are a minority in our business. Most reps do not, can not and will not do what it takes to be a specialist worthy of extra compensation.

From the industry side it is well known the margins are going down, not only on machines but I am noticing a decline in margins on the service side as well. With the industry move towards more color and capturing printer fleet output of an office... money has to be made elsewhere and more value added services provided by a dealership and even their leasing partner. Leasing companies do the same thing.. walmarting rates.. the lowest rate, but all the other hidden charges and fees and high

In the past, I had heard that sometimes we have trouble printing PDF's that were created by Autocad. Not sure why. I have never encountered the situation but perhaps printing with Plotclient WIN would change the outcome? If there's a chance the files are corrupt, perhaps the person who created them could do it again and see if the results are different.
