New models are designed to be independent, intuitive and scalable for businesses users

Samsung Electronics announced ten new multi-function printer (MFP) models to the European market  at the ‘Smart MultiXpress’ Unveiling Event taking place at IFA 2014, in Berlin. The MFPs are the first printers of their kind to be equipped with an Android operating system, and are designed to be more independent, intuitive and scalable for all types of business environments.

As part of Samsung’s focus to develop printer solutions that seamlessly fit into the IT and Smart office ecosystem, the new Android based MFPs will feature Samsung’s Smart UX Center to operate independently without a PC, app scalability, and a consumer friendly UI.

“As Samsung continues to strive for user-centered innovation, the introduction of the first Android OS-equipped MFPs will enhance Samsung’s smart office experience for business customers and allow for greater multidimensional and advanced printing technologies,” said Dr. KiHo Kim, Executive Vice President of Printing Solutions at Samsung Electronics. “Our new printer line combines Samsung’s best in class IT technology and OA device know-how to create more innovative products for the new office automation market.”

Printing without a PC

The new Samsung Smart MultiXpress series of MFPs each feature a 10.1-inch full touchscreen panel that enables users to search and print from web browsers, emails, maps, images and other types of content – without the need to connect to a PC or server. The touchscreen also offers the ability to preview documents, as well as editing and annotating capabilities.

"As our B2B customers’ work styles and processes continue to become more mobile and untethered from PCs, Samsung will continue to provide new printing solutions that feature intuitive user interfaces, superior performance, and above all else, increased efficiency and productivity for the mobile and fluid workplace,” said Dr. KiHo Kim.

User Friendly UX and Personalization

The new Smart MultiXpress series MFPs feature Samsung’s Smart UX Center – the same touch-based, customizable UX technology featured on the Samsung Galaxy® line of smartphones and tablets. The Smart MultiXpress series MFPs are also considered the industry’s first application of haptic technology that re-creates the sense of touch with vibrations for a more tactile user experience.

Extensible and Limitless Connectivity

Android OS empowers the Smart MultiXpress series MFPs with limitless printing app scalability – similar to smartphone technology – and allows on-the-go connectivity through the Samsung Cloud Print, reinforcing both the connectivity and scalability of the range.

Furthermore, all Smart MultiXpress series MFPs are compatible with Samsung’s XOA (eXtensible Open Architecture) printing solution platform, and can be customized to meet specialized business needs.

Improved NFC Printing Technology

Additionally, the new MFPs have now been upgraded to NFC Pro to meet the changing needs of the B2B market. By adding the new Samsung NFC Pro accessory (available and sold separately), the new MFPs allow easy access from smartphones for mobile printing, a stronger user authentication process, and improved IT administrative functions, such as the ability to easily “clone” the same security settings on multiple MFPs just by tapping on the NFC Pro accessory.

High Quality and Reliable Technology

The launch of Samsung’s Smart MultiXpress series of MFPs will both increase business customers’ efficiency and productivity, as well as provide even faster document processing speed – output speed is up to 1.5 times faster than previous 1GHz single-core CPU thanks to its 1GHz dual-core CPU – and enable multiple users to print and scan large documents without disruption.

In addition, the Smart MultiXpress series MFPs offer longer lasting toner and drum technologies – thereby extending the lifespan when compared to similar models – resulting in superior reliability and lower total cost of ownership.

There is a Samsung Mobile Printing app in the iTunes AppStore that would allow users to do this.  Most manufacturers have their own apps for both iOS & Andriod at this point.  It doesn't look like these new models are AirPrint compatible yet, but I'm sure Samsung is working on it with Apple since they have a number of previous models that do work with AirPrint.

In the end, we are talking about another copier vendor trying to make a splash with a new User Interface (UI) similar to what Sharp did two years ago.  The fact that Samsung has attached one of their 10" Android tablets to the front of a copier is unique but the LCD size is not.  There are many factors that go through a buyers head when they buy a copier.  Generally, the UI is not at the top of the list.

I would absolutely disagree.  Whether or not a machine is easy-to-use is a huge factor for most customers, at least ones that listen to input from their users and don't just go with whatever is the fastest & cheapest.  I've sold a lot of Ricoh equipment to displace Xerox or Konica Minolta systems that customers thought was too hard to use.  If a UI is flashy but difficult to navigate for users, it offers no redeeming value, but if it has sizzle, intuitive & makes user interaction simple, it's a huge plus.

I just spent the last 5 minutes playing around with a new Samsung MFP we ordered in with the Android UI. After being super excited for the past month to try this out...

...I hate it. For several reasons.

1) The operating system lags from screen to screen

2) There's absolutely no hard buttons and I have fat fingers.

3) Everything is spread out.

4) There are useless apps, like Calculator and a Movie app, and not enough printing apps

5) The Box app (similar to Document Server or Mailbox) doesn't appear to have any password protections or customizable folder features that I've seen as of yet.

6) There are two browser apps: Web Browser and Web Print. They are both exactly the same except Web Print allows you to print. Why not have just 1 app? I did a test print and it took about 60 seconds to spit out a small picture I found off Google Images.

7) The tablet screen is not detachable. I don't understand why on earth anybody would want to browse the Internet, look at pictures or watch movies on their laggy Android printer when a perfectly good PC, laptop, smartphone or REAL tablet could do the same.

For Tier 1 brands I can walk up to a new model for the first time and figure out the basic functions. However, this android seemed very complex and more sizzle than steak.

Very disappointed in this.

I meant to type this up last week but we spent some time with the machine on Thursday. I do think it is a neat touch but not sure if I like it just yet. I am going to go off some of the points Czech made.

I did not find the op system had lag to it for starters. When we switched from screen to screen it worked just like my Ipad and my Galaxy tablet. I think they could have had more printing apps and less useless apps. I don't know why in the world someone would use the internet on the copier, but for some techy person who has to have the latest and greatest it may be a good selling point.

This display will take some time to get use to. It may scare some customers away based on having to learn something completely different but others may love that. I did take a proposal on one to a client right after our meeting with our Samsung Rep and she loved the way the screen looked just from the brochure.

I don't know if it will necessarily be a game changer but I think it will get the techy gadget people interested enough to purchase them and do well. Based on previous models from Samsung we will just have to wait and see how they acutally perform in the field. If you have been a Samsung dealer for a while you know some of the junk they have put out in the last 7 years.
