A printer in Houston, operating an iR8500, he produces 350,000 copies per month. He rates the machine at a 9 (with a scale of 1 to 10) FOR PERFORMANCE. He converted his black & white output to digital and has a total monthly volume of 750,000 pages.

Upgrading from a Xerox 5100

Upgrading from a Xerox 5100 was covered in the following: “I’m looking to upgrade to digital from my current Xerox 5100, we run 270,000 copies per month. We’re looking at either a Xerox 480ST with standard finisher or a Canon iR8500 with booklet maker. Both will be connected.

Xerox has offered a purchase price of $32,000 and service and supplies at $817 for 80,000 and then $.0075 for overs. Canon has given me a price of $35,500 and service and supplies at .0065, with a minimum of 100,000 copies per month. Which is best?

Comments: First let’s look at the total monthly cost for lease, service and supplies at the anticipated volume for each of these models. At a lease factor of .0200 for a 60-month lease, the Canon iR8500 would run $710.00 lease payment per month. Service and supplies would be $1,755 (270,000 x .0065), bringing the total monthly cost to $2,465.

The Xerox 480ST would run $640 for the lease payment plus $2,242 for service and supplies, for a total monthly cost of $2,882.

While these two newer models have not yet been proven in the field for performance, based on past digital models from these companies, I would think that the 85cpm Canon would be at least as good as, if not better than, the 75cpm Xerox machine.

So, to recap, the Canon iR85000 is 10 cpm faster, has a booklet maker, should perform at least as well as the 480ST and is $417 per month less. Given the facts as shown for these two models, I believe that the iR85000 would be a better deal.
