We have a customer who has the embedded OCR option on a Savin MPC6004.  We have told them that using this to delete blank pages is possible.  However, it slows down the delivery of the scanned file because it not only deletes blank pages it OCR's the document and makes it searchable in the process.

I didn't realize they were going to want to make this their default and that they would be scanning 200 pages at a time and wondering why they take 45 minutes.

They seem to be okay with it.  But that got me thinking that maybe there is a better solution.  We found a software http://www.a-pdf.com/scan-optimizer/

that will delete blank pages without OCRing the document.  Has anyone used this to monitor a folder and do this?  I have used another one of their products and it works well.

Also, am I correct that the OCR option on the MFP creates PDF+text and does not alter the document like PPDM or something that is in essence scanning to Word.  We don't want customers using the OCR option to delete blank pages and unbeknownst to them getting altered scans.

Thanks for any feedback!

Rather than have it always on, set up a program key for when they need to use that feature.  You can then make a shortcut on the front panel of the machine.  Its slow because its using the memory of the machine's display to crunch all that data to OCR and remove blank pages.

Another option might be to use the scanning capabilities built into the ICE apps.  You could set up the 60-day trial or an NFR version for testing.  With that I believe the OCR happens out on the web.
