Top three points I make when against Kyocera. #1. Take them color samples from your device and any Kyocera because the color output is sub par on all units. If you don’t have access to one look in your crm for an account you co-exist with Kyocera in. Or the next time you have a knock out make some samples and keep them in a binder. Maybe I'm wrong about this but with the combined boards isn't there a chance John is a non-Ricoh-type person? I think Hotspot printers are a great option, other than the USB thing. Still trying to figure out how to handle the student walking in with just a USB drive. I guess he could email the doc to the printer from home .

Don't drive yourself nutso with ScanRouter. It was a dog when it was supported. Your 15cpm supports Scan to folder and is much easier to configure and maintain. And 64bit Vista? forgettaboutit. Vista Home is not scan friendly because the permissions are so hard to find. But it can be done. If you decide to go to the dark side (Mac) it supports SMB (scan to folder) also.

A customer was demo'ing a canon color copier with fiery in their office. I stopped by on the second day to check to see how everything was going. The office manager asked me if there was any way that images or pictures would just randomly print off the hard drive of the system. Apparently, some very explicit images had been printed on the copier right before I got there. Rightfully so she was absolutley furious. I explained that the pictures had to have been printed by someone in the office.

Art, this is a serious issue. This is no different than hard drives in our computers, laptops, netbooks or anything that uses a HD. They are all storing electronic digital magnetic information. Those that have encryption are not safe if you know what you are doing. These encrypted containers can easily be tapped and opened. wow, thanx for that! I thought we were safe with the lastest Ricoh security measures. Are we? I knew older copiers were very suceptable to getting information, however with recent upgrades with Ricoh products are we safe? Seems like none of us are safe except for pulverizing the drive as you stated. How is everyone else handling this? Is the CBS guy blowing smoke, or are there criminals out there buying copiers just to get access to the hard drives and if so, it's gotta be a hot and miss...

I've uploaded the doc file. Also, tech support did provide some very detailed information to me via email that I just reviewed. The main difference is that they are scanning via IP which doesn't account for the possibility of the IP Address changing.

Since the CBS video was aired I have had two municipal govt's begin to demand both Data Overwrite and Hard Drive Encryption become mandatory on all future copier acquisitions. I have also had several recent commercial customers ask about copier security who would have never asked before.

Much faster access time, 100% reliable, no moving parts, can't crash the drive head with sudden loss of power corrupting drive. Much smaller, lighter, much lower power consumption. Much less heat generated. Much less headaches for Service Dept compared to HDD as there is virtually no service required. An SSD can fit mechanically into the same hardware slot as a HDD. I would say you answered your own question. Why would you double the cost of a component of your copier when the benefits are negligible? You mentioned faster access time which is true. Don't you hate standing at the copier while the screen is saying "Please wait, Accessing Hard Drive?" You mentioned 100% reliable, which is not true. They are certainly more reliable, and there's no concern about drive heads, but once again, not a lot of problems there. The most common issue with hard drives...

Almost no idea what you are talking about. In my experience, people who have workflows that would benefit from storing images to the copier also need a Fiery controller. In those types of worflows with high-res color images, its quite easy to wind up with very large files. I've seen files stored on the Fiery that were more than 1GB for a single file. So, in those specific types of workflow, yes, a larger hard drive is not only useful but necessary. For general office work, there is generally...

I would not expect buyers to give up on the idea of a Data Overwrite kit anytime soon. 90% plus of my Sales quotes these days involve copier secuity.

Let me further clarify my post. My understanding is this, Ratio Germany has filed for bankruptcy and no longer doing business. Ratio America is now its own entity and doing business seperately. They drive the Plotbase PM website and are selling Plotbase/Rip Cube etc. There is legal discussions that will allow Ratio to work with Ricoh. I think the local dealers biggest advantage against the National vendors is flexibility. Dealers naturally have much shorter chains of command due to having far less employees. Therefore, dealers can make quicker decisions. The National Vendors are always going to have the advantage of price and a lesser concern for profitability. Sharp is still in. They are under-distributed and I'm sure Japan is dissatisfied with this so I would not be surprised to see some changes, but Sharp is still invested in printing and these changes will probably be intended to drive growth, not just cut costs. On average, business computers are replaced every 5 years. That means (on average) 20% of all computers are replaced each year. If you did NOT charge for reinstalling drivers, you would need to employ someone (or several someones) full-time to drive around reinstalling print drivers on every client's computer they just replaced. It seems those customers most unwilling to pay are also those most unable to accomplish simple tasks such as reinstalling a print driver on their own. Funny story:...

Amanda, Just formatting the Hard Drive and reloading system Software is definitely not enough to meet the due diligence requirements because the data can still be recovered by a knowledgeable person with forensic software. Even though it isn't easy to do, it is possible and that is enough to make it unacceptable to most companies. The need to reload System Software is a two edge sword. We charge an inexpensive fee (1 hour labor) to format the hard drive, but if they want something more secure, we will remove the hard drive from the old machine and replace it with a new hard drive. For that, we charge the cost of the hard drive + labor and either destroy the old hard drive or return it to the client. That typically costs less than $500 and is easy to roll into a new deal. We've done this on Sharps, Canons, Toshibas, Kyoceras and Konica Minoltas. The hard drives are easy to...

But if you can't restore the OS on that hard drive, you would be returning an inoperable machine to the leasing company. I agree, finding/replacing the HD isn't the issue, it's the proprietary software reload that is. Anyway, the conversation should go like this: "Your old vendor didn't include that? Let me show you what we do at the end of lease (show them your HD Format/wipe procedure and the 'you keep the drive' option)."

I think Ricoh waited so long to release an A4 system like this for the fear of what it will do to the A3 business. I know my Sr. Management is concerened that reps will start selling A4 systems to replace existing A3 systems and drive revenue down. The perfect spot as everyone has pointed out is in the MPS world. This product will do well to knowck out the HP, Lexmarks, etc... I wish we had it sooner.

Let's face facts, we all need to drive revenue, however we all still need to make commissions. Do the math, up until about 7,000 pages per month an A4 will have a lower TCO than an A3. If the customer does not need 11x17, then I'm goign with the A4....period. I'll have to move more boxes, but in the long run I think I'll make more.

The Ricohs have been slow sellers is not because of end user needs or wants. Basically ours is a quota/revenue driven business from the top to the bottom. The preferred compensation model for commissions is that of a revenue based plan with commissions. Why have a GP driven comp plan for your sales people when your Dealership or Branch has a revenue based quota plan from the manufacturers? It just doesn't make sense.
