This Week in the Copier Industry Ten Years Ago, The Second Week of February 2008

Looks like a thread from 1996 appeared and I'm not sure how that happened.  But, it's interesting about the time frame that Danka purchased the Kodak copier unit. Danka brings back memories also since the Danka name is now gone also.  Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe Canon bought Danka, right?

Enjoy these threads from ten years ago this week on the Print4Pay Hotel.

The deal would allow Kodak to shed its strategically unimportant and marginally profitable Office Imaging business while making Danka a much larger player in an industry that has been consolidating. Danka would be the principal

This Week in the Copier Industry Ten Years Ago, The First Week of February 2008

Really, has it been only ten years since our MFP's incorporated color scanning?   Seems like we've had it forever.  One of the threads from this post tells about the Ricoh MP4000 which came with standard color scanning.

For me 2008 marks the start of the Great Recession here in the US.  Most of my business at that time was in the AEC market.  Thinking back, I lost almost 40% of my accounts to the Great Recession, some just closed up shop, while others went out of business.  Far as I'm concerned I did not see a comeback until late 2015.  I never want to go through that again.

Rival printer maker Seiko Epson left its forecasts for the year to March unchanged, despite strong quarterly results, citing an uncertain economy. Slowing US demand prompted Ricoh to cut its 2007-08 outlook. Canon had

I'm thinking maybe HP, if they can't cut a deal for Ikon. Ricoh is still buried in the Lanier, IBM buys. Canon would really piss off Ikon if they made a move. KonicaMinolta does not have the financial strength nor the personel to pull it off. Xerox is still working out the bugs with Global. Hp maybe the solution.

Danka is dead... I have heard rumors that Danka may split when they do get sold. Konica Minolta is looking at the commercial business. Though I cannot confirm it. It may make sense for Ricoh PPBG whom is funded through Ricoh Japan to look at buying the High volume portion of the business. Considering that they have a contract in place with Kodak. I do know they just battled hard to keep a very highly regarded Solutions Engineer from going to Ricoh PPBG the day he was suppose to report in.

There's an interesting thread below about an RBS sales person that person accepted $3,500 from a copier sales person so that RBS could win that bid of 73 copiers.  Which raises in interesting question about gifts, trips and prizes to a person that works for a corporation if they buy their copiers from xyz dealer.

It's my understanding that any gift, trip or prize is then the property of the corporation and not the person (decision maker).  Yet, we find some dealers openly engaging in offering these items for purchasing their copiers.

I'm thinking this would make a great topic for discussion on the forums.

You can get it from the Savin site. Your looking for the 2525/3030 (E-3000) PPD for the MacOS X (Ricoh calls it an E-5000 but it’s the same). No additional hardware is needed. I used it in a PC environment so I can’t tell you for sure it will work with a MAC but I don’t see why not. Postscript is Postscript. Good Luck.

It would make sense, it's obvious all other efforts to make inroads into the copier world have failed miserably and perhaps after seeing Xerox buying Global to finally make the down the street work for them, HP sees the light.

That Sucks. I can't say that we haven't seen screw-ups like that before where I am but the sales rep wouldn't be on the hook for the missing equipment. We have a specific return request form. If we fill it out correctly and it doesn't get picked then the reps in the clear.. Except any possible damage control with the customer. In spite of that ... Try to have a Happy Thanksgiving....

likely a trend that will continue. Albin, another large KM owned "dealership" out of Detroit has just purchased a small and failing KM dealer in South Bend. As a KM dealership here it should be interesting to see what effect they will have in the marketplace. I love the KM line, especially the 60ppm and up b&w and the color. We also have Canon, so we shall see.

Re: RBS Continues to Dump Machines & Make Dealers Look Bad!

If you have a signed contract and RBS quotes a lower price, you have grounds for a law suit. It's considered unfair business practices and tortuos interference. Your dealerships laywer should send a letter to Ricoh's legal council seeking compensation. The last thing they want is a lawsuit.

Re: Hughes-Calihan sold to Konica Minolta

Legally Lanier/Ricoh will give Hughes-Calihan about three years of support. It doesn't leave Ricoh with many choices for dealers in AZ and NV. Ricoh is not exactly in love with IKON. Ricoh is currently building it's own direct branches in AZ and NV.

Art, I agree with the Professor. I have consulted with my father, who works in the class action lawsuit business, and he indicated we (independent dealers) may have grounds for a class against Ricoh Direct branches. The area is very gray but I don't think they want to hear that a large group of independents dealers are seeking compensation for questionable business practices. I just looked it up: Predatory pricing (also known as destroyer pricing) is the practice of a firm selling a product at very low price with the intent of driving competitors out of the market, or create a barrier to entry into the market for potential new competitors. If the other firms cannot sustain equal or lower prices without losing money, they go out of business. The predatory pricer then has fewer competitors or even a monopoly, allowing it to raise prices above what the market would

This Week in the Copier Industry 10 Years Ago (Second Week of November 2007)

The one thread below reminded me of a recent appointment with a healthcare account.  So, much for FAX is DEAD, right?  Seems health care still needs and loves faxing. I'm guessing it's because faxing is still the most secure way of sending a document or maybe it's because it's just easier compliance for HIPAA.  What ever the reason, FAX is NOT Dead with healthcare.

On a recent healthcare install, I was asked if our Ricoh device could do a fax broadcast with the LAN Fax. I stated yes in can, and then asked why they wanted the fax broadcasting.  They stated that they are using a fax broadcasting service and are paying $75 per broadcast, and they were doing 4 broadcasts per month.  Dang, I blew it, I was not aware of this and if I was I probably could have added more GP to the order.  In any case,  whenever I'm in that type of account, I'm going to ask about fax broadcasting all of the time.

If you're interested in knowing what type of healthcare account, please send me an email and I'll tell you.  apost@p4photel.com

As Friday came to close, there were only two (sales) of us left in the office by the time 4:30PM rolled around.  Why were we in the office at 4:30PM on a Friday?  That's easy, our month ends on Monday and we're still trying to get move **** forward.
As we were packing up, the topic of demonstrations came up somehow.  There we were reminiscing about how awesome it was to do demonstrations.  The planning, the preparation, and of course the sizzle.  I'll admit it, I could present excellent demonstrations and close. I can remember telling myself that I'm not leaving this persons office without an order.  After hours of wrangling I got what I wanted.    Perhaps, I will do a blog on demo's this week.

I wouldn't assume that. Just because they can't buy any more new from Konica doesn't mean that they don't have new inventory in their company's warehouse or other source. Their purchasing manager might have stocked up, a client might have rescinded an order before delivery and they were stuck with it, who knows.... Still gives you a tactical selling point, though.

Number of new leads added to the intranet We will also be tracking total number of sales visits and number of sales. Eventually, we'll get a handle on the value of our pipeline. An important part of selling is to keep track of the ratios and numbers so you can understand your pipeline and improve it. How many calls does it take to get an appointment? How many appointments does it take to get a sale? And so on. Eventually, you'll find that it generally takes 10 calls to make an appointment and 10 appointments to make a sale, for instance. Then you'll realize that if you made 1000 calls last month and made $5000, then you'll want to make 2000 calls to make $10,000. Once

Suppose you make 100 calls one month and get 20 appointments for the next month, but that next month you're busy going to appointments so you didn't make any calls -- how many appointments will you have on the third month? Of course, if you've done any sales already, you're quick to realize that If you made $20000 in sales this month, it's because you made 2000 calls last month. Or something like that. That's the sales pipeline in reality. You

Re: B2C defined

Correct. B2C means "Black to Color." This term was created about 5 years ago to designate the "next big thing" in the industry, which was the move from black & white output to color output in the office. Sort of along the lines of "A-to-D" for the Analog to Digital transition. I think the results of the last few years are proof that this revolution has happened (and is still happening). And to re-iterate what Eddie 2 Times said, Ricoh color MFPs can be used in a B2C environment (traditionally

or comparison! Oh, and do not waste your toner to give your competitor free advertising! BTW, JasonR, you had it right the first time. Allow me to comment on this for a moment. Ricoh B2C is a strategy, not a product. The conecpt of B2C came about as an effort to transform B&W customers into color. The B2C strategy was to offer a system that was equivalent to B&W systems in every feature and function, with comparable B&W CPC. Most importantly, systems like this did not need a color specialist to sell as typical customers were just looking to make sure reference colors were in place (ie red apples, blue sky, and green grass

Re: SP4110N Envelope Crinkling

·
I have never seen a Ricoh printer (or any other laser printer) consistently produce printed envelopes without creasing the paper. 3 "flaps" of paper going thru pressure and heat - like ironing shirt collar. Humidity seems to affect this more than anything else. GelSprinters won't wrinkle your envelopes. It doesn't appear you can select number 10 size envelopes. I think you will have to input the length and width as a custom size.
