Just got this from a friend who is a Sales Manager..."Things ARE a bit different here… Although we are and will be Hughes-Calihan, it is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Konica Minolta. They will be closing the direct KM branches in AZ and NV, and folding them into us in April. We no longer offer Lanier… This is pretty big news. I work for RBS as wide format specialist, I hit my numbers selling wide format, and that quote is impossible. It's below cost, not including networking, delivery, toner, etc. No need to fire this guy, he can't make a living selling like this anyway. Some offices (and dealers) don't have anyone that understands wide format, and will try to sell them at a cut price to keep a good customer and keep someone that knows wide format out of the account. You can get it from the Savin site. Your looking for the 2525/3030 (E-3000) PPD for the MacOS X (Ricoh calls it an E-5000 but it’s the same). No additional hardware is needed. I used it in a PC environment so I can’t tell you for sure it will work with a MAC but I don’t see why not. Postscript is Postscript. Good Luck.

It would make sense, it's obvious all other efforts to make inroads into the copier world have failed miserably and perhaps after seeing Xerox buying Global to finally make the down the street work for them, HP sees the light.

That Sucks. I can't say that we haven't seen screw-ups like that before where I am but the sales rep wouldn't be on the hook for the missing equipment. We have a specific return request form. If we fill it out correctly and it doesn't get picked then the reps in the clear.. Except any possible damage control with the customer. In spite of that ... Try to have a Happy Thanksgiving....

likely a trend that will continue. Albin, another large KM owned "dealership" out of Detroit has just purchased a small and failing KM dealer in South Bend. As a KM dealership here it should be interesting to see what effect they will have in the marketplace. I love the KM line, especially the 60ppm and up b&w and the color. We also have Canon, so we shall see.

If you have a signed contract and RBS quotes a lower price, you have grounds for a law suit. It's considered unfair business practices and tortuos interference. Your dealerships laywer should send a letter to Ricoh's legal council seeking compensation. The last thing they want is a lawsuit.

Legally Lanier/Ricoh will give Hughes-Calihan about three years of support. It doesn't leave Ricoh with many choices for dealers in AZ and NV. Ricoh is not exactly in love with IKON. Ricoh is currently building it's own direct branches in AZ and NV.

I have consulted with my father, who works in the class action lawsuit business, and he indicated we (independent dealers) may have grounds for a class against Ricoh Direct branches. The area is very gray but I don't think they want to hear that a large group of independents dealers are seeking compensation for questionable business practices. wideformat, you are so right. it is a completely different animal and most dealerships don't really do it right. I was with a dealership that was sold on marketing the wide format product and because of the way they set up the comp program the rep and the manager made the same spiff whether it was sold at retail or salesmans outcost. given that there was no incentive to do anything than just place the box.

Savin Downloads The engine in the CLP240d is basically the same as the c3535/c4540. So go to the color multifunction drop down and select the C3535/c4540(E-5000) click go. Scroll down to the Mac OSX section and download the PPD Installer. The ppd installer contains the "driver". Run the ppd installer on the Mac just you would to install any printer on the MAC. Basically the MAC thinks it printing to a C4540 with a fiery (postscript) but its not. It's really a CLP240d. As far as the CLP240d

RBS in New Jersey especially the Reps that handle Ocean County, New Jersey. Too make a long story short, we were in a very competitive deal with Xerox for a 240W back in May. We sold a 240W with a one roll feeder and plotbase print n scan for a low amount (I needed one more to hit my quota). I did the deal, did the training and moved on. Ran into a problem with a prospect printing to a Savin CLP240d where colors were incorrect. Printing from MAC OSX, Adobe Illustrator. Sent the file to my upline IT support and at first they were unable to recreate the problem. Then, they realized that they were using Creative Suite version 2 and the prospect has version 3. This Week in the Copier Industry 10 Years Ago (Second Week of November 2007)

The one thread below reminded me of a recent appointment with a healthcare account.  So, much for FAX is DEAD, right?  Seems health care still needs and loves faxing. I'm guessing it's because faxing is still the most secure way of sending a document or maybe it's because it's just easier compliance for HIPAA.  What ever the reason, FAX is NOT Dead with healthcare.

On a recent healthcare install, I was asked if our Ricoh device could do a fax broadcast with the LAN Fax. I stated yes in can, and then asked why they wanted the fax broadcasting.  They stated that they are using a fax broadcasting service and are paying $75 per broadcast, and they were doing 4 broadcasts per month.  Dang, I blew it, I was not aware of this and if I was I probably could have added more GP to the order.  In any case,  whenever I'm in that type of account, I'm going to ask about fax broadcasting all of the time.

Neal: Point well taken, however how do we compete with the HP if you do not have the the Muratec or the Sammy? Or how do you compete with Xerox that has the souped up model of the Sammy. I think non 11x17 will gain in popularity, and the soon to be introduced 55ppm mfp from Sammy should prove to be interesting...we'll see.

This Week in the Copier Industry 10 Years Ago (Last Week of October 2007)

As Friday came to close, there were only two (sales) of us left in the office by the time 4:30PM rolled around.  Why were we in the office at 4:30PM on a Friday?  That's easy, our month ends on Monday and we're still trying to get move **** forward. 
As we were packing up, the topic of demonstrations came up somehow.  There we were reminiscing about how awesome it was to do demonstrations.  The planning, the preparation, and of course the sizzle.  I'll admit it, I could present excellent demonstrations and close. I can remember telling myself that I'm not leaving this persons office without an order.  After hours of wrangling I got what I wanted.    Perhaps, I will do a blog on demo's this week.

Ricoh and Server setup

I have run across a couple of instances of when I put a Ricoh out on a server and use the RPCS driver that I get error messages when I print from the user station--typically saying that I must change paper size to A4 and then resume printing by resetting the job. When I load the driver directly to the station, it works fine. Any ideas?

The immediate trend (KMBS, Xerox) is Japan direct to dealers in the USA. Global dealers are able to purchase for 30+% off of DMAP 6 equivalent. If Ricoh is going to survive this war they will have to eliminate Ricoh USA. Which got me wondering: What does Ricoh USA do for their dealers...really?!

I recentley spoke to local Global CFO, and he stated that they went to Xerox and demanded prices lower than the japanese manufacturers so they could compete. There are no spiff programs for sales people just rock bottom pricing. Keep in mind that most of the Xerox equipment is from overseas also.

We also have 1050s in the field, but we have had a different experience from you. They run well, and our support from Konica has been superb. Our Ricoh support on the production-level B&W has been lacking, to say the very least.

Art, Your so right. People ask me when will I retired.(My wife retired 5 years ago). I said what will I do. Work part time a Walmart. I work the same hours now and make a lot more money and still having FUN. I like what I do and can't think of another job right now. I also travel down rural roads and I been selling in this territory for 26 years. I have a lot of great accounts and meet a lot of great people.

W2400 Notes!!!!!!

Got this from Greg in an email, can anyone else verify this? Are you aware that for a W2400 the embedded controller is already in the machine. I just did 2 installs last week..You need the Print Option W3600, Scanner Option W3600 and File Format Converter to enable it to Print and Scan. Seems to work fine w/out the Ratio software. Batch printing TIFFS and PLTs are possible thru Webprint, but not PDF's (Ricoh is fixing this, I hope). I beleive Batch printing PDF's is possible thru Desktop Binder

I wouldn't assume that. Just because they can't buy any more new from Konica doesn't mean that they don't have new inventory in their company's warehouse or other source. Their purchasing manager might have stocked up, a client might have rescinded an order before delivery and they were stuck with it, who knows.... Still gives you a tactical selling point, though.

Print 17 aka Graph Expo starts tomorrow in Chicago.  I was able to attend last years event in Orlando, however the thought of flying to Chicago and the need to still perform in my day job led me to opt out of Print 17.

Make sure WINS Server is turned off unless the customer has a WINS Server. Ricoh "out-of-the-box" have WINS ENABLED with the IP ADDRESS of 0.0.0.0. I have seen this to cause a DNS issue when trying to resolve names to IP address for PC on the network. Also, you MUST set the SMB Domain/workgroup correctly or it will not find any PC's on the LAN. The default SMB workgroup/domain name programmed in the MP161 is WORKGROUP. If that is not the customers workgroup/domain name then you WILL get that

This term was created about 5 years ago to designate the "next big thing" in the industry, which was the move from black & white output to color output in the office. Allow me to comment on this for a moment. Ricoh B2C is a strategy, not a product. The conecpt of B2C came about as an effort to transform B&W customers into color. The B2C strategy was to offer a system that was equivalent to B&W systems in every feature and function, with comparable B&W CPC. Most importantly, systems like this did not need a color specialist to sell as typical customers were just looking to make sure reference colors were in place (ie red apples, blue sky, and green grass

I have never seen a Ricoh printer (or any other laser printer) consistently produce printed envelopes without creasing the paper. 3 "flaps" of paper going thru pressure and heat - like ironing shirt collar. Humidity seems to affect this more than anything else. GelSprinters won't wrinkle your envelopes. It doesn't appear you can select number 10 size envelopes. I think you will have to input the length and width as a custom size.

Two things going on there. B2C is about how the b&w and color clicks are handled. Basically, a b&w machine that also has color. Some color copiers can't separate out the solely b&w clicks and charge the color cpc for every click. B2C can make the distinction and charge accordingly. "Creative color" is marketing spin to cover the fact that Ricoh B2C color isn't as good as some other manufacturers, such as Konica Minolta's. well said Shaja, bit depth is far more important to quality color than resolution. if you have 8 bit 600X600 your quality will be much better than a 2 or 4 bit with a resolution of 2400X1800. Like a Konica minolta guy told me on resolution you can only put so many dot in an inch until they start to just pile up whereas the bit depth has to do with the color variation per pixel.

Art, It will do some but not on a regular basis. We had to replace a c4500 that was doing lots of thicker coated stocks with a Canon. I just sold a C811DN and I am certain the brochure on that product says "glossy". I also have the recomnended paper chart from Ricoh and will try to send tomorrow if I can find it.

Aficio 2232 Fax forwarding subject line ?

When setting up the aficio 2232 or any Ricoh product is there a way to set a default subject line for scan to email or fax forwarding to email. Customer had a Toshiba machine and liked that the Toshiba could be programmed to include the fax number of a fax that came in on before forwarding to an email account. The message included the fax number of the incoming fax in the body of text of the email. Also for scanning to email can the subject line be defaulted to a certain message ?

I am not sure about the forwarded fax message including the sending fax machine number. I know the default subject for the MP series color machines can be changed to whatever the end user needs. The sending fax machine should transmit the fax information along with the fax so any image printed/viewed should display the fax number anyway. Either way, the current B2C Ricohs are tough to beat in a lot of areas.

A good rule of thumb is to run no more than about 25% of the machine's recommended monthly volume on "special" paper (e.g. heavy-weight or coated). N.B.-The paper recommendations in this file for the MP C3500/C4500 apply for the C811DN as well...

Also, If that doesn't fix it, you might have to do a firmware upgrade on the machine. For instance, I had to update the firmware on the Savin C2525 in order to SMB scan to Vista PC's. Savin/Ricoh didn't mention this until I called with an issue.

Warranty heads now on order. One of our salesreps is looking at our demo unit. He's a bit disappointed about the finisher not doing booklets. It also takes a long time to print ledger full color stuff. Lots of time around the drum drying off. We explained to the rep that the copy quality is better than a Riso but not as good as xerographic. The product does have a niche market.....especially with a limited finisher.

A smart day-care center owner we know only markets to the presidents or CEOs of large corporations. Most large organizations don't want the "shift" and overhead of providing an in-house day-care center. My thoughts also, I recommended Tohoku,Ricoh manufacturing a 4 color version of the TCII almost four years ago, heck if they can make a TCII, they can make a TC IV. I also though of just having a plate maker (master maker), this would keep the cost down on the hardware. They must be thinking of something else, I beleive ink technology may have put the final nail in the coffin for digital duplicators.

I agree with Art. Tohoku is never going to listen to good common sense. Ricoh has left digital duplicating technology on the vine to die in the USA. What we have now is what we got. Make the most of it, inkjet technology is on the rise - just take a look at HP's Edgeline and Riso's ComColor......

We have installed one of the patches. Our technician spoke with Ricoh and they said there is no fix for the issue right now and that the other patches will not do any good but that a beta version is circulating and new firware should be out in July. I just have trouble believing that this Fiery has been available for the time that is has and it has this problem still.

the first experience we had in over 2.5 years. I highly recommend you contact your Ricoh rep and try to get this scheduled. The Fiery rep we had knew more about color theory and how to manage a controller w/software than I ever imagined someone would ever know. He also provided his contact info to deal with future Fiery potential situations as well as imageStoreFront and other production solutions. They very well may provide a rep with another avenue of communication to solve the type of

From what I understand, they are no longer authorized to sell RFG equipment. Mention that to the customer along with aftermarket support. Global may be digging holes if they are still selling RFG equipment, and may not be authorized to service.

We have our first E-8000 Fiery controller in the field on a Ricoh 5560 and when the scanning function is used it locks up the machine and needs to be rebooted. If you aren't getting significant commissions on "stolen" maintenance agreements, negotiate for better...it is in your company's best interest. If you are getting 10% on the agreements you sell with equipment, I would "sell" your management on the idea of paying 25% of the first year on agreements "stolen" from the competition. If they say they can't afford it, then how about 10% each year for 3 years and build for yourself a revenue stream of income. Dealer's and sales reps must come up with

I'm a Major Acct Exec at RBS and I don't sell that low on 100 machine placements. This could probably get me fired but we all know who is running RBS now and profit was never a part of their plan! I'd lay money down that the rep's manager was not with RBS before April 1st! Don't blame the rep, they still make money on next to no profit deals now and if it comes from a zero based account (no Ricoh placements), they make even more! This Week in the Copier Industry 10 Years Ago (Third Week of May 2007)

From the amount of threads there was some awesome activity.  While reading through one of the threads, I noticed the Samsung SCX 6345N.  For me, this was the start of the A4 multifunctional era.  I believe cost for the 45ppm device was somewhere around $1,900 with MSRP about $4,000.  Not much room for margin, however I can remember acquiring many net new accounts with the Sammy because there was no need for 11x17.  Funny, it's ten years later and many manufacturers still refuse to give us full featured A4 devices that can staple, three hole punch and multi-folding.

It resolves the name just fine. I can do a connection test from the smtp entry screen and it connects just fine. If I change any of the other variables, it fails instantly and logs why eg. invalid username/password. As it is now, it trys for like 5 minutes then just fails. And yes I did try it by IP address just for the heck of it and no different.

I do all but the saddle stitching when I produce some of our company's inhouse marketing pieces. My files also are 12 pages in Word and 12 pages in Excel (12 pages in one workbook), and my pages are all letter size also. Use the "magazine" icon in the RPCS graphical driver; it looks like a sheaf of papers folded with the pages numbered. In addition, here is a great little file that I actually use while doing a demo of how this operation works. It depicts the setup process at the workstation using both the RPCS and PCL driver interfaces. It is only four pages, but does a great job of showing the customer what happens with a four page file (folded out put, not stapled due to the number of pages). I normally will leave these behind with the end users so they'll have a reference point on hand.

You could try to clear the scanner, printer, and ncs under 5801. You might have to put the printer ip, gateway, subnet, dns,and email settings back in,so write down the numbers, and reset up the scanner defaults. I just found another today and this worked for me sounded very similar. In my case I could not even scan to a folder using the cross over cable.

Im 99% sure this already is in the architecture. I remember having done this at a real estate account of mine. I was able to limit the number of copies produced per account code. Check in the admin tools.

Resolved! WOOOHOOOO Just thought I'd post the final solution. A tech on Smarka told me that the 2-wire router will not allow smtp traffic from the Savin machine pass. We had an extra SBC Yahoo modem here and and extra router. I took them up there and switched them out for the 2-wire modem/router and everything worked fine. Thanks for all of your help and hopefully this will help if it comes up for any of you down the road.

I just figured the retail cpc with drum, toner (mono), 100K PM Kit and 200K PM Kit. Retail cpc is .0117116, not sure what the wholesale cost is, however how much would you add on a per copy basis for on-site service if the user was doing 3,000 pages a month in volume. One-of-A-Kind Marketing Many folks buy because of a "fear of loss". Can you market your product as a "one-of-a-kind" for a "limited time only?" Show them what they stand to gain as well as what they will lose if they don't order now. One auto salesperson we know always shows the purchaser a model that is a "second choice" in case the "preferred model" gets sold before the customer makes a decision. This can really speed up the sales process.

This has been the case with Savin reps for years. I was aware that you Ricoh guys went shopping with points earned, but as a Savin guy I've always enjoyed the cash! I make a ton of money on the Savin "Fast Track" program in which our points are used as dollars on a Savin debit card. Not only does this program pay for my family's yearly trip to Cancun, but also pays for our Baltimore Ravens season tickets! Here is the Smart Accounting Admin manual. Real estate and legal environments are going to love this software if it works like the brochure says. However, I ordered this software from Savin two weeks ago, and it is still not in...we were told that it has to be shipped directly from the third-party that developed it. I'd recommend we be careful when promising setup...this is really slowing down my copier delivery! Hopefully, I'll get this installed next week and get some face-to-face time with

The response I received then (I think I was questioning the function on one of the early color boxes) was that when selecting TIFF / JPEG, the system makes the distinction based on whether the file is color or black & white. I have experience doing this because I am our purchasing manager. (I have six ship-outs pending at the moment -- oh, the gray hair LOL. Just kidding on that gray hair thing.) I am being told that new color copiers are not coming with atarter toners anymore. Therefore, I have to add to my sales cost a complete set of color toners unless the customer elects to go with a cost per copy contract. Is this accurate, no starter toners anymore?
